This is not the worst thing that could happen to Trump but it just hurts the aura around his deal-making abilities. Making a deal on healthcare is a lot more complex and detailed than erecting a building or golf course. Trump does not have the knowledge in the intricacies of healthcare to deal properly and get individuals on board. Trump delegated that to others and just put his name on the bill just like he does with the little intricacies of his construction projects. Trump is the big picture guy and he’s not going to get bogged down on the little details but it’s those little details that matter to the individuals casting their votes. So when Trump is unable to speak intelligently about those details, he has no cache to make a deal.
Trump walked away from the deal and moves on to tax reform which may be even tougher to tackle. If he learned anything from this experience, it’s that making deals as President is not as easy as he thought it would be.
See you back on the corner next week.
