Mitt Romney releases two years of tax returns but is that really enough?

After hesitation to release his tax returns, Mitt Romney finally obliged and put out both this years and last years returns. At first Romney stated he would not release any returns until April if he were to become the republican nominee but after pressure was placed on him by the other GOP candidates who released their returns it became a damaging issue.

“What do you have to hide?” Was the theme of the attacks against Romney and his hesitation to release his records and it is clear why he would be hesitant. Romney made a lot of money and as one of the richest candidates to ever run for the Presidency added with the current economic climate and you have very bad PR for the Romney campaign.

Romney made $21.7 million in 2010 and $20.9 million in 2011. As comparison Newt Ginrich made $3.1 million in 2010 and Santorum, who has not released his as of yet, should be much less than Newt. In net worth Romney is somewhere between $195-$250 million compared to Newt Ginrich: $6.7 million, Santorum: $1 million, and Obama: $10.5 million you begin to understand the problem taking shape.

These stats can give you the picture that the President has been painting so far leading up to the re-election campaign. A showdown that he will focus on the haves vs have-nots. By setting up Romney as the face of wealth, Obama seems poised to keep laying into the candidate as he is already calling for him to release more than two years of his returns with his official Twitter tweeting out the following.

“@BarackObama: When he wanted to be VP, Mitt Romney gave John McCain 23 years of tax returns. Now Americans only get to see one: http://t.co/yVAwXlfp”

This is a comparison of what past presidential candidates have released as far as tax returns.

During his battle against Hillary Clinton, President Obama had released eight years worth of tax returns and will challenge Mitt Romney to release more than the two. While I believe the pressure from the media will force Romney to do so, this will play into THE story during this re-election campaign. No matter when the tax returns are released they will show that Romney has made exorbitant amounts of money over the years and while his tax returns may be good and legal, they cast a shadow over the entire Romney campaign. His tax returns will show how every year that average Americans were struggling that he was raking in cash by the truck loads and paying low tax on them. This is made for ads and bumper sticker fodder. Romney will be labeled as the stereotypical out of touch wealthy wall street type who got rich and didn’t pay his fair share.

President Obama is not a pauper by any means, but compared to Mitt Romney he can play the part. While Obama is campaigning against his own self interest, after-all he is asking for his own taxes to be raised as well, Romney is campaigning on keeping his taxes at the low level they are because obviously he needs the money. The fight this year will be on taxing the rich vs not taxing the rich and the 99% will win out. If Romney wins the nomination he would be painted into a corner that he won’t be able to get out of.

Romney just won’t sit well with the average American voter and with soundbites from him saying things like “Corporations are people too” he might as well be wearing a top hat with a monocle while twirling his villainous mustache and cackling maniacally.
