Debate number one was a flop for Donald Trump, regardless what him or his surrogates would have you believe, and the Republican nominee for President has taken a dip in many battleground state polls. This “loss” for Donald Trump does not sit well with him and you can tell that he was not happy about it immediately following the debate. Trump was patting himself on the back right after the debate for not getting down and super dirty against Hillary.
“I’m really happy I was able to hold back on the indiscretions in respect to Bill Clinton. Because I have a lot of respect for Chelsea Clinton,” Trump said after the first debate. When asked what he would have said Trump answered, “Maybe I’ll tell you at the next debate. We’ll see.”
My thoughts are that Donald Trump seriously thought he did well in the debate, only because I can’t imagine him ever thinking otherwise. Trump’s political run is the epitome of ‘fake it til you make it. Donald Trump is far from a politician, as he reminds you often by pointing out how Hillary IS a politician. Yes, of course she is because this is a run for the highest political office in the land. While being a politician might not be a requirement you need to be politically savvy and well versed in foreign affairs. Donald Trump was able to skirt through the Republican Primaries by being the loudest and attacking his opponents regularly. Guys like Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, and Ted Cruz just weren’t good at that type of game. Trump was able to polish his entertainment game through ‘The Apprentice’ and appealing to Republican Primary voters who were generally angry in nature. This along with the fact that there were so many candidates helping water down the field gave Trump the opening to gain momentum while everyone else folded on top of each other until that momentum was too great to stop.
Trump is now forced to stand and try to sound like he knows what he’s talking about for 90-minutes in these debates against Hillary and speak policies. Trump won the primaries by slinging mud and keeping his deeper content to a minimum. He didn’t need to explain huge policy points or positions. That doesn’t work in a general election though. In a general election it’s not about getting the people on the right to vote for you, that’s pretty much already set for Team-Trump. Just like the people on the left are going to vote for Hillary. It’s about convincing undecided voters who hover in the middle to vote for you. That is where the problem lies. Trump isn’t preaching to the choir like he was in the Primaries, he’s trying to gain converts.
Sunday’s debate is a key moment in this election. This is where we see where the Trump campaign will be going for the rest of the election. Trump did not bring up the infidelities of Bill Clinton because it will not play well to that audience he is trying to win over not because of some “respect” he had for Chelsea or he wouldn’t have brought it up immediately after the debate. Trump knows that doesn’t look Presidential but he absolutely short circuited after that first debate and made a lot of missteps the following week. Frustration obviously set in and Trump began to mud sling again, playing to his base on the trail.

If Donald Trump feels like he is losing control of this race he may go into Sunday with a ‘do or die’ mentality. Trump might throw every low blow he has at Hillary because it is apparent he will have trouble speaking on policies for ninety minutes. Trump does not have the depth to speak on such things and he doesn’t have the humility to get himself prepared to. It’s just not in him. It’s actually against his entire philosophy. Trump sees himself as the ‘ideas’ guy. He’s gonna give you the broad strokes of his potential Presidency. When he doesn’t know, he’ll be bombastic and general. If Trump decides to go dirty he’s going to lose big. Hillary has comebacks ready for every ugly line he can throw at her and he will look the worse for going there. The Vice Presidential debate isn’t going to move the needle on this election, although it did wonders for Mike Pence’s profile. It’s all about Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. This next debate will show us exactly where Donald Trump sees himself.
